Riveted connections


In processed condition a rivet consists of set head and closing head and in the DIN standard it is classified according to the shape of the set head. Both length and material of a rivet are selected according to the material to be riveted, the clamping length and the shape of the closing head.


Advantages of riveting


· suitable for dynamic and static loads
· no structural transformations cause by the influence of heat and no extreme deformation
· positive and non-positive connection



Processing


The set head is first placed into a holding block, which is referred to as rivet dolly. At the same time the parts to be connected must be pressed together by a rivet setter to achieve the best possible riveting result. The rivet set now forms the desired closing head. As a measure to avoid any clearance between rivet shaft and bore hole the shaft is axially upset in the bore hole area; this is referred to as bearing pressure of projected area.





Approximate values


Test riveting procedures should be performed for closing head forming of hollow and semi-hollow rivets used in mass production.
